Our 2015-2016 Rotary Scholar Needs Your Help

In the May NewsNote we told you about Jhon Christian from the small rainforest village of Sapo Playa. He has been selected to participate in a Rotary International Exchange in Canada for the 2015-2016 school year. Jhon is a recent high school graduate, top in his class. He and his family are subsistence farmers and fishermen. He has spent a lot of time volunteering at the CONAPAC Amazon Library, helping children learn to read. Our campaign to help Jhon realize his dream of studying abroad can be found at www.gofundme.com/amazonstudyabroad.
Jhon is in Lima right now. We've covered the cost of his medical, dental, and passport needs, plus his airplane ticket to Lima. The Club Rotary San Borja Sur is housing and feeding him, plus sending him to English classes in preparation for his trip in August to Chilliwack, British Colombia. This city is about an hour from Vancouver, with a population of almost 100,000 people, a big jump from his village of 124 residents. So far there's only $620 in donations at our GoFundMe campaign. We need to get to $7500 to give him the support he needs, so please help if you can.

CONAPAC 2015 Workshops in Full Swing

CONAPAC hosted its first of four 2015 regional teacher/community leader workshops in the village of Sucusari. Annually these workshops bring updated information to educators and community leaders by reviewing their roles and responsibilities to the students and their communities at large. Daytime and evening sessions offer a range of opportunities for teachers, community leaders and CONAPAC staff members to share ideas and experiences. Three more workshops are on the CONAPAC calendar this year so that every teacher in every village and all communities leaders have access to this important information.
